Recent speculation suggests that Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares might be heading to a Western Conference rival, the Seattle Kraken.

While the focus has primarily been on Leafs forward Mitch Marner in recent months, rumors about Tavares are gaining traction. As he approaches the final year of his contract, Tavares holds a no-movement clause (NMC), which complicates a potential trade. Despite the challenges, fans continue to propose various trade scenarios online.
A noteworthy proposal has emerged where the Toronto Maple Leafs would receive three significant assets from the Seattle Kraken in exchange for Tavares, who is set to earn $11 million next season.

The rumored trade would see Toronto acquire a third-line center, a bottom-six forward, and a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. This move could benefit Seattle as they aim to bounce back into the playoffs after a disappointing season. For the trade to proceed, Tavares would need to waive his NMC, a decision he may be more inclined to make following recent controversies related to unpaid taxes.
As NHL free agency opened in 2018, John Tavares signed a seven-year, $77M contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

A provision in the U.S.-Canada tax treaty commonly used by professional athletes would allow him to pay a lower tax rate on a $15M signing bonus.

Or so he thought.
With the new season approaching in about two months, a blockbuster trade like this could significantly alter the landscape.
Last season, Tavares recorded 29 goals and 65 points in 80 games for the Maple Leafs, adding one goal and one assist in seven playoff games.
