Elliotte Friedman shared today that the Toronto Maple Leafs are considering adding DJ Smith, to Craig Berube's coaching team.

DJ Smith is a name fans are familiar with, having previously worked as an assistant coach under Mike Babcock from 2015 to 2019. Babcock's tenure lasted a year longer.
friedge mentioned DJ smith potentially joining berube's staff if he doesn't stay in LA this afternoon on sn590which uhhhwould definitely be a hire!
The potential addition of DJ Smith or any new coach, to the staff could shed light on another decision the Leafs seem poised to make. Assistant coach Dean Chynoweth is currently not contracted for the season having joined the team in 2021.
also mentioned dean chynoweth is not under contract for next season

During Smiths stint with the coaching staff the Leafs made three playoff appearances in the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons. Were eliminated in the first round each time. Consequently, hearing his name connected to the team again may not sit well with some fans.
It would definitely be...a return.
The Maple Leafs have an offseason, with changes expected in both the coaching staff and the roster. Bringing Smith back to the coaching team might just be one of moves. Keep an eye on the Leafs this summer as it could turn out to be quite an offseason for them.
