The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially confirmed that John Tavares will continue as an alternate captain after passing the captaincy to Auston Matthews.

GM Brad Treliving announced that Tavares will retain his leadership role, despite no longer being the team's captain.
John Tavares, who served as the Maple Leafs' captain since 2019, is set to support Matthews in his new role. The decision to keep Tavares as an alternate captain reassures fans and underscores his ongoing importance to the team's leadership structure. Tavares, with 1,040 points in 1,109 games over his career, remains a vital figure for the Leafs.
Auston Matthews, now the first American-born captain for the Leafs, takes over leadership duties after a period of speculation in 2019. Matthews, who has scored 368 goals and tallied 649 points in 562 games with Toronto, brings a fresh perspective to the team. The change is hoped to spark a renewed push for deeper playoff success.
Tavares expressed full support for Matthews, stating his readiness to contribute significantly this season. His continued leadership is expected to play a crucial role in the Leafs' quest for a successful year.
