The talk around Pittsburgh was that #87 Sidney Crosby was waiting for his 37th birthday on 8/7, to confirm an extension of his current $8.7 million dollar contract.

Well the 7th of August came and went without an clue or indication of a extension. Pittsburgh insider and writer for The Athletic Rob Rossi tells us that, there was never any actual timeline for a deal to get done. He also tells fans there is no need to panic, the captain has no intensions of leaving.
"Crosby's 37th birthday was never a target date for a new deal that he and the team remain confident will be signed, multiple Penguins and league sources said," Rossi shared. "...Crosby has told close friends he intends to re-sign with the Penguins and that he, agent Pat Brisson and Penguins hockey president/general manager Kyle Dubas are largely aligned about details of a new contract; however, his priority this offseason has been on training for the upcoming season. There are 'no issues at all' between Crosby and the Penguins."
This is great news for all Penguin fans. With rumors circulating about trades this past winter and the Penguins missing the playoffs for two consecutive years, all signs point to Crosby finishing his career where it started.
The delay does have some fans worrying that he could have a change of heart by not inking a deal just yet. The Pens are in need for a roster rebuild and maybe he might not want to end his career like that.
The odds of the Penguins making the playoffs per Draftkings Sportsbook are +120 for the 2024-25 season.
"Crosby has counted only $8.7M against the cap on his past two contracts, granting the Penguins his services at a perceived below-market level for the past 16 seasons," Rossi added. "He is unsure exactly how long he wants to keep playing and 'doesn't want to put (the Penguins) in a bad spot' if he signs a longer deal and doesn't play it out in full, a source close to Crosby said."
Rossi did note that all parties agree, "a delay in finalizing a new contract for Crosby naturally leads to speculation that a deal will not get done."
The parties can also ease everyone's concerns by finalizing a deal. Everyone is hopefully this will happen before September.
