We have talked about Ryan Graves and Rikard Rakell as two Penguins that just not have found a grove with the team that would amount to their combined salaries and years. Graves has 5 more years on his deal worth $4.5 million annually. And Rakell has 4 years left at $5 million.
That is $9.5 million a year, for a minimum of 4 years on two players who have not stood out as earning their keep.
Rumor has it that Nurse could be on the trade block for Edmonton. His play mixed with his huge salary $9.5 million over 6 more years make his possibly expendable. He is listed as 24th trade target by Frank Seravalli.

Oilers Defender Darnell Nurse Trade Speculations Spark Salary Debates
Now it may seem out of the box for the Penguins, who want to lose salary and go younger to trade for Nurse. But his figures match Graves and Rakell. Basically, an even swap money wise.
Rakell could work on the Oilers as a top six forward. Graves and Nurse would be basically a trade off on the blue line. But Nurse could work better on Pittsburgh.
Nurse lining up with Kris Letang could be a perfect pairing. At worst, it would match the defensive pairings the Penguins have used during the 2023-24 with Letang. The Pettersson-Karlsson line with Nurse and Letang could prove to be a solid line 1 and 2 on the blue line.
Maybe the Penguins do not need a defenseman and should concentrate on getting younger, but trying to find another team to possibility take Rakell and Graves off their hands for a practically even salary swap may not be a bad thing. A chance on Nurse over Graves could also prove to be worth taking a shot.
