John Ludvig made his NHL debut with the Pittsburgh Penguins a year ago, but now the 24-year old has a new home ahead of the 2024/25 NHL season.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have made some big time moves this off-season, and while most are seemingly positive in the eyes of the fans, they've now seemingly regretted a recent move. Yesterday, it was announced that John Ludvig was placed on waivers by the team, with the front office hoping he would clear and make his way to the AHL, but now it has been confirmed that's not the case.
According to TSN's Chris Johnston, the Colorado Avalanche have claimed the 24-year old defenseman on waivers, giving Pittsburgh one less depth option on the blue line heading into 2024/25.
Ludvig was a former third-round pick of the Florida Panthers who made his NHL debut last season with the Penguins, tallying 3 goals and 5 points in 33 games played, showing that he could be a solid piece for the future of the team. However, that's no longer the case, as he will join the loaded Colorado Avalanche blue line in 2024/25, with a potential NHL role out West.
Currently, the Penguins have a solid blue line headlined by Kris Letang, Marcus Pettersson, Erik Karlsson and former Avalanche defenseman Ryan Graves, and with no role for him immediately, it somewhat made sense for the team to move on from Ludvig. However, he would have been a great depth player for the team in the AHL in case of injury, but now, the team will need to look in other directions if injuries occur, as he will be headed to the Avalance.
