The Penguins and Red Wings were supposed to face off on September 28th; however, that game will now be played tonight instead due to mechanical plane problems.
As part of the rescheduling, both teams prepare for going up against each other in the preseason tonight, September 30th. Puck drop is set to be at 7:00 PM, and fans can watch via the Penguins' website or listen on the official Penguins app and radio station 105.9 The X.
Saturday night's preseason game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings was unexpectedly postponed from its scheduled time. The charter flight of the Penguins developed "mechanical issues" that prohibited the team from making it to Detroit on time for the game. After trying numerous times to resolve the problem and not postpone the game, ultimately it would have to be.
The Penguins released a statement to clarify the situation with the team's plane: It was not able to take off safely. While trying to resolve the mechanical failure, it brought several hours of waiting on the plane for players, coaches, and staff. Rob Rossi and Max Bultman of The Athletic said the team had gone through a morning skate at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Pennsylvania. A mid-afternoon departure was planned.
The Penguins were on the plane by 3 p.m. but didn't leave the ground until well into the night. By 5:30 p.m., the Detroit Red Wings started to announce a possible delayed start to the game, attempting to push the puck drop to 8:30 p.m. But by 7 p.m., the game was postponed, leaving a sea of disappointed, but understanding fans at Little Caesars Arena.
This incident was later followed by a message of apology sent by the Penguins to their fans, the Red Wings organization, and everyone concerned. The postponement was extremely disappointing for those people who had already arrived for the match at the arena. While many of their fans wished that some sort of entertainment would be provided in the arena, there was no alternative except to postpone the game due to the logistical issues arising out of it.
As the Penguins continue along their preseason journey, fans can look forward to more thrilling matchups that lead into the regular season as Josh Getzoff returns as the play-by-play voice for SportsNet Pittsburgh. Here's hoping tonight's game gets underway without any further delays or interruptions.
