After moving Lars Eller to the Washington Capitals, many believed it was the start of many moves to come for the Pittsburgh Penguins, but on Monday, they've once again shocked the entire NHL world.
Despite struggling to a 7-12-4 record through 23 games played, the Penguins have now made the surprise move of acquiring former first-round pick Philip Tomasino from the Nashville Predators.
As revealed by the Penguins official social media account, the team have landed Tomasino in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round draft pick, and while it's definitely a head scratcher, it's a buy low option that could pay off in a huge way for the Penguins.
Unfortunately for Tomasino, he just couldn't catch on in Nashville, with the 23-year old being picked No. 24 in the first-round by the Predators back in the 2019 NHL Draft.
Since that point, he has played in 159 games at the NHL level, tallying 23 goals and 71 points in that time, but given the huge moves they made in the summer, there just wasn't room for him on the roster.
Now, he gets the chance to start over in Pittsburgh, who are looking for a way to spark their lineup, with this move potentially being the thing that does that for this struggling team.
With just 1 assist in 11 games for Nashville this year, it's unclear whether or not the Penguins can bring the best out of the 6-foot-0 forward Tomasino, but given the relatively cheap price to acquire him, it's a risk worth taking for a team looking for any spark to get them going.
