Patrik Laine avoided a serious injury thanks to an additional piece of protective equipment, according to the Montreal Canadiens.
Laine will miss two to three months rather than the five to six months that the Canadiens had previously predicted, if not longer. In fact, after a video of the play went viral online, a lot of fans assumed he would miss the entire season. Fortunately, that won't come to pass.
The injury appeared to be as severe as it could get at first. Laine's knee was bent dramatically to the side, and it appeared to be extremely painful. Our fears were only heightened by witnessing him lying motionless on the ice for an extended period of time. His annoyance was evident when he threw his helmet and glove down the tunnel after being helped off the ice.

Given his history of injuries, it is only natural that both Canadiens players and supporters were devastated when Laine went down. He is undoubtedly among the NHL's more unfortunate players. Martin St. Louis, the head coach, expressed some feeling when speaking about Laine's injury.
We now understand why Laine was fortunate enough to have some luck this time. It appears that he had a knee brace on his left knee during the preseason game against Toronto, despite the fact that he will still miss two to three months of play. He could have easily torn his ACL or MCL instead of only suffering a sprain, but the brace probably helped support his knee during the impact. In order to guard against more injuries, it's possible that the forward will wear braces similar to this one in every game going forward.
In response to the fans who contacted him after the play, Laine posted something on social media today. He affirmed that he would be back on the ice for the Habs this season and thanked the supporters for their support. Through their own X account, the team shared his post.
Hopefully, Laine will return to the ice in the near future. Should he return on the projected timeline, he could even help the team's efforts to rise up the standings, perhaps even pushing for a playoff spot. At this point, we will just have to wait and see what happens.
