Cole Caufield of the Montreal Canadiens paid one of the most moving tributes to the late Johnny Gaudreau that we've witnessed so far.

Last week, Cole Caufield announced that he would be retiring the #22 jersey he has worn throughout his NHL career and switching to #13 in honor of his idol, Johnny Gaudreau. In fact, Caufield received some assistance from the National Hockey League to make this thoughtful tribute possible.

In a beautiful moment of reflection, Johnny Gaudreau's wife Meredith broke her silence today to express gratitude for Caufield's touching tribute. The loss of Johnny and his brother Matthew has deeply affected the hockey world, and this gesture serves as a reminder of Johnny's legacy.
Pittsburgh Penguins forward Kevin Hayes was one of the first to comment on Caufield's Instagram post.
"Love this eloc," he wrote, cleverly spelling Cole's name backward, showing his admiration for the gesture.

Following Hayes' comment, Johnny Gaudreau's widow, Meredith Gaudreau, added her heartfelt words.
"Highlight of his summer was with you guys. He loves you eloc," she wrote, referencing Johnny's pride in playing with Caufield during the World Championships, an experience he cherished before his tragic passing.

A legacy of love and loss in hockey

These poignant exchanges serve as a powerful testament to the impact Johnny Gaudreau had on his teammates and the hockey world at large. Cole Caufield's decision to change his number is not just a tribute but a symbol of the love and camaraderie shared among players.
As the NHL season approaches, the memory of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau will be honored by all teams, but the Montreal Canadiens will carry a daily reminder through Caufield's new number 13.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the Gaudreau family as they continue their journey of healing. Johnny and Matthew's legacy will remain a cherished part of hockey's history.
