The Edmonton Oilers are gearing up for a pivotal summer in 2025 when Connor McDavid's contract extension is due, and fans may have reason for concern.

The Edmonton Oilers made a big splash this week by securing Leon Draisaitl on an eight-year extension worth $14 million annually, but concerns remain over Connor McDavid's future, as he is up for an extension in 2025.
"Connor's going to do what's best for him, right?"

"That's just the way this works, and it's supposed to work this way. I did what I felt was best for me personally."

Draisaitl commented when asked about McDavid's potential contract.

This has sparked some anxiety among Oilers fans, especially given Draisaitl's candid remarks about wanting McDavid to remain in Edmonton but recognizing that every player has to prioritize their individual future.
Currently, McDavid's contract sees him earning $12.5 million per year, and with his current trajectory, he's expected to command a deal well over the $14 million Draisaitl just signed for.
"McDavid is, in short, one of one. And one of the best players to ever play the sport. Fifteen percent isn't going to work.»

This was a statement from James Mirtle of The Athletic, highlighting that McDavid's next contract may break salary cap structures.
Oilers fans are hopeful that McDavid will stay with the team, but these developments have added an element of uncertainty. The narrative has shifted from an assumption that McDavid will follow Draisaitl's lead to a situation where McDavid's decision is far from guaranteed.
Plenty could happen before McDavid's contract comes up in 2025, but the dialogue surrounding his future is bound to intensify, especially in light of Draisaitl's remarks and the Oilers' need to stay competitive in an increasingly challenging NHL landscape.
While there's optimism in Edmonton, fans may need to brace for a long, uncertain summer ahead.
