Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jack Campbell will be leaving the team to join the NHLPA Player Assistance program, which is some unfortunate news from the NHL today.

The NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program will provide some care for Jack Campbell of the Detroit Red Wings, the league announced, as he is taking a leave of absence from hockey to address personal matters. The Red Wings organization will be without 32-year-old Jack Campbell during this period. It is unknown when he will be able to return until program administrators have given him the all-clear to compete on the ice.
After playing for the Edmonton Oilers for the previous two seasons, 32-year-old Campbell signed a contract with the Red Wings this summer. Campbell, a native of Port Huron, Michigan, was bought out by the Oilers in the summer and was sent to the AHL the previous season. Signing with the Red Wings offered him the opportunity to start over closer to home.
Throughout his nine-year NHL career, the veteran player has made 176 appearances for the Stars, Kings, Maple Leafs, and Oilers. He made one appearance for the Red Wings in the pre-season, allowing two goals on 22 shots while playing half of the game against the Sabres on Sept. 30.
When cleared by administrators, Campbell is then eligible to play on ice again with the Red Wings under the terms of the program.
