Danny DeKeyser, former Detroit Red Wings defenseman, is challenging HCC Life Insurance for not providing the disability payments he claims he's owed.
After a career cut short by injury, DeKeyser is seeking nearly $700,000 in compensation.
DeKeyser, a stalwart in Detroit's defense for a decade, began his NHL career with a modest 11 games in the 2012-13 season but quickly established himself as a key player. Over his career, he accumulated 146 points across 547 games. However, his NHL journey came to an abrupt halt in 2022 when he was placed on injured reserve due to persistent physical issues.

After being sidelined, DeKeyser sought a comeback through a professional tryout with the Vancouver Canucks. Despite his best efforts, it became clear that his injuries would not permit him to return to play at a professional level.
Now retired, DeKeyser is turning to the legal system to recover what he feels he's rightfully owed. His lawsuit against HCC Life Insurance seeks close to $700,000 in disability payments. The lawsuit claims that HCC Life Insurance has failed to meet its obligations, thus leaving DeKeyser without the financial support promised due to his early career termination from medical issues.
"The purpose of this case is to compel Defendant HCC Life Insurance Company to provide certain long-term disability benefits in the amounts and at the coverage levels promised, as well as for an accounting, and an award of attorney fees and costs incurred as a consequence of Defendant's failure to do so."
While DeKeyser's NHL career ended sooner than expected, he has transitioned to a new role as an associate agent with Saros Real Estate. The lawsuit's outcome could significantly impact his financial stability and future plans.
