Johnny Gaudreau of the Columbus Blue Jackets sadly passes away in tragic accident
The Columbus Blue Jackets released a heartfelt statement today following the tragic passing of star forward Johnny Gaudreau and his younger brother Matthew Gaudreau.
Gaudreau was reportedly in town for his sister's wedding, which was scheduled to take place today, before his untimely passing.
This is undoubtedly one of the most heart-wrenching stories we've encountered in a long time. Rest in peace, Johnny Gaudreau; your memory will forever be cherished.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman released the following statement after the tragic passing:
"The National Hockey League family is shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew. While Johnny's infectious spirit for the game and show-stopping skills on the ice earned him the nickname 'Johnny Hockey,' he was more than just a dazzling hockey player; he was a doting father and beloved husband, son, brother and teammate who endeared himself to every person fortunate enough to have crossed his path."
Gaudreau, 31, spent his entire NHL career with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Calgary Flames, earning seven All-Star selections. However, he will be remembered more for the person he was off the ice than for his numerous on-ice accomplishments.
We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew. Our hearts go out to the Gaudreau family during this incredibly difficult time. Johnny's passion for the game, his leadership, and the joy he brought to so many will be remembered forever. We extend our deepest sympathies and offer our support to the Gaudreau family and all who were touched by their lives. May their memories bring comfort and peace to all who mourn their passing.
